to EU governments

Academics can't stop a genocide - governments can

Dear heads and members of EU governments,

"Academics can't stop a genocide - governments can." With this Appeal (inspired by the appeal of ÄRZTE OHNE GRENZEN DEUTSCHLAND), we turn to you and ask you to do everything in your power to end the horror in Gaza. The next meeting of the heads of EU member states on 1 October in Copenhagen is the opportunity to show that the governments of EU countries are against the systematic violations of international humanitarian law and do no longer tolerate the willful destruction of the livelihoods of the people in Gaza.

All EU governments must  enable targeted economic and political sanctions against these crimes, such as moratoriums on deliveries of military goods to Israel.

It has been emphasized that the Israeli government is responsible for the supply of the civilian population with necessary goods such as clean water, food, and medicine and must allow aid deliveries. But exactly the opposite happens. Instead of humanitarian supplies, the people of Gaza experience systematic bombings, blockades, and starvation used as a weapon. The current offensive on Gaza City is driving more than several hundred thousand to flee. But the only escape route is not only clogged but also attacked by the Israeli army and there is hardly any gasoline - the price of escaping the deadly bombs is extremely high. The elderly, the wounded or seriously ill, and heavily pregnant women remain behind - defenseless against attacks.

We call on all of you to:

• Agree to measures to end the genocide perpetrated against the Palestinian population in Gaza!

• Use all the resources at your disposal to increase the pressure on the Israeli government – for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, unhindered aid deliveries, and the protection of medical personnel and health facilities!

• Enable evacuations to all EU countries – while maintaining the right to return!
