Abstract:

Annie Jacobsen's 2024 bestseller, Nuclear War: A Scenario, accurately describes, minute by minute, how a nuclear war could destroy civilization in just 72 minutes. In response, Timmon Wallis' new book, Nuclear Abolition: A Scenario outlines, step by step, how the world can achieve verifiable, irreversible global nuclear disarmament before it's too late.

In this seminar, author Timmon Wallis will describe some of the steps to nuclear abolition that are in his book, focusing on how the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons can be used to put pressure on the nuclear-armed states, and especially the United States, to deliver their 55-year old promise to negotiate nuclear disarmament "in good faith" and "at an early date".

Dr. Timmon Wallis is  the author of Nuclear Abolition: A Scenario and Executive Director of NuclearBan.US, based in Northampton, MA. He holds a PhD in Peace Studies and has been a nuclear disarmament activist for much of his life. His 2016 book, Disarming the Nuclear Argument, contributed to the negotiations for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, for which ICAN won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. And his 2023 book, Warheads to Windmills: Preventing Climate Catastrophe and Nuclear War spawned a national coalition with that name, currently consisting of nearly 70 peace and environmental organizations working together to wean the United States off nuclear weapons and fossil fuels.
